Tandy wants inquiry into claims

Jon TandyCleared councillor Jon Tandy, pictured, will today ask parliamentary standards chiefs to look into postal vote fraud claims made against Labour councillors by Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski.

Royal Mail worker Mr Tandy wants a full investigation into the claims made to police by the Tory MP last month, claiming his reputation had been damaged.

Detectives said on Thursday they would not being taking any action against any Labour councillors after finding no evidence of wrongdoing.

Mr Kawczynski had sent police four letters containing allegations of fraud, some written on Communication Workers Union headed notepaper.

Mr Tandy, Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for Shrewsbury, today said he would pass a police report about the investigation on to the Parliamentary Standards Committee, along with his own complaint about the MP’s conduct.

Shrewsbury MP Daniel KawczynskiUnder-fire Mr Kawczynski, pictured right, first made the claims in the House of Commons where he was protected by parliamentary privilege.

His rival Mr Tandy said today: “I am definitely passing this on to the standards committee to look at. I have been waiting for the police report and as soon as I have got that I will be sending my own report to the committee.

“He has abused his position. A lot of MPs have approached me about this from all parties, offering me support. I would like him to apologise on the front page of the Shropshire Star to me, postal workers and the people of Shrewsbury for the hurt he has caused.”

Mr Tandy today reiterated his call for Mr Kawczynski to resign from his parliamentary position in the wake of the investigation.

He said: “I would like him to resign for all the hurt he has caused but I don’t think he will do the honourable thing.”

Mr Kawczynski yesterday said he had not raised the concerns for political gain, claiming it was his duty to report the allegations.

Mr.Tandy, Daniel was doing what was requested of him by those that elected him and in an arena that affords him and ALL MP’s some protection so they can talk openly and directly.

If you have all this support from others, why aren’t we hearing from them then.

It would appear that YOU are out for political gain Mr.Tandy.

Kawczynski is like many politiciancs, anxious to make cheap points to get his name in the lime light. He can of course do so whilst hiding behind the privialge given to MP’s of not being sued for defamamtion for comments made in the Commons.

If he was really doing this as it was his duty to report such allegations, why not do so quiietly to the police or other relevant authority? Instead he makes a statement in the house, and lacks the courage to repeat his allegations publicaly.

Mr.Tandy. Had our MP Mr.Kawczynski not passed this information on to the authorities of failed to inform Parliament of the allications in the way he did, he himself would have been open to critisism on withholding this information. No names were mentioned therefore he was indeed correct in what he did.

He received not one but FOUR allegations of electoral fraud. What should he have done? Ignored it in case he upset someone? No, he did the right thing. We all know what Labour does with allegations of fraud and abuse of privilege don’t we? Just look at the cash for honours investigation - how can Tony Bliar’s old flat mate and best buddy be allowed to intervene in the investigation?
