Store damaged by burglars

police-light-dark1.jpgBurglars targeted a supermarket near Shrewsbury, causing considerable damage to the building. They struck at the Co-op in Bicton Heath.

The store, which is on the site of the former Welsh Harp pub in Welshpool Road, Bicton Heath, was burgled in the early hours of yesterday morning.

West Mercia Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Spokesman Richard Ewels said: “There has been a burglary at the Co-op in the Bicton Heath Shopping Centre in Welshpool Road. It was reported to us just before 1.30.

“There is considerable damage to the premises. Police are liaising with site staff to establish what’s been stolen.

“We are appealing for information from anyone who might have seen or heard anything overnight which might be connected to this crime.

“It’s likely the culprits will have been there or around the premises for some time and probably would have made a lot of noise breaking in.”

Adrian Barradell, PR manager for the Co-op, said: “We can confirm we had a break in in the middle of the night and it was a forced entry.

“However, nothing was taken as far as we are aware and while there was a tidy up this morning, we are pleased to say we are open for business as usual.”

Councillor Peter Adams, for the Bowbrook area, said: “They came through the roof. The roof panels are down and all the cladding is hanging through the roof.”

The £3 million store opened in 2004. Anybody with information can call police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
