Something to smile about

Liza Ward, from Belladonna Beauty, and Kat Sonley, from Fitness First, with Ryan Esson of Shrewsbury TownShrewsbury Town players had two reasons to celebrate today - after helping to raise a record £40 million for Comic Relief and taking another step towards a League Two play-off spot.

The Shrews secured a 2-1 win over Peterborough last night, at home in front of a crowd of just over 4,000.

Last night’s mammoth seven-hour Comic Relief show raised a final total of £40.2 million thanks to a host of performances from British comedy’s finest.

One of the highlights was an appearance by the Prime Minister alongside Catherine Tate. Tony Blair got the upper hand over the comic playing teenage tearaway Lauren - uttering her catchphrase “Am I bovvered?” back at her.

Shrewsbury Town players Ryan Esson and Sagi Burton entered the spirit of Red Nose Day when they put their legs in the hands of a beauty therapist.

Goalkeeper Ryan and defender Sagi both had their legs waxed to help Shrewsbury gym Fitness First raise money.

The injured pair pledged to go for the smooth look if the St Michael’s Street gym raised more than £500 for this year’s appeal.

They kept their promise yesterday when they allowed Liza Ward from they gym’s Belladonna Beauty salon to start tearing.

Ryan said: “I’m not really into waxing like some of the other guys but it was for a good cause. I only had the lower part of my legs done but Sagi had the whole lot done.”
