Work to start on Lord Hill statue

statue.gifShrewsbury’s landmark statue of Waterloo hero Lord Hill is to be given a facelift.

The statue, which sits on top of a 133ft column, will be surrounded by scaffolding for the next six weeks while maintenance work takes place.

Routine maintenance work on the 17ft statue will take around three weeks to complete.

And it will take specialist contractors around a further three weeks to erect and dismantle the scaffolding.

Completed in June 1816, the column is the largest Grecian Doric column in the world, and at 133ft, stands 13ft higher than Nelson’s column in Trafalgar Square.

It was erected in honour of the Lord Rowland Hill who was commander in chief of the British Army.

Born near Hawkstone, north Shropshire, in 1772, Lord Hill fought alongside the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo.

The work will be carried out by Taylor Pearce Restoration Services Ltd.
