Fire ravages warehouse

A furniture warehouse in Telford has been badly damaged after fire broke out today. The fire began in the early hours of this morning.

It damaged 50 per cent of the first floor of Stubleys Warehouse, in Church Street, Wellington.

Sub-officer Steve Morris, from Wellington fire station, said 20 firefighters were called to the scene.

“There was a fire involving a range of mattresses in the top floor, so the building was heavily smoke-logged,” said Mr Morris. “We went out at about 12.30am and returned to the station at about 4am.

“Fifty per cent of the first floor was damaged by fire and all of the building was heavily smoke-logged.

“Everything in the room was destroyed and most of the other stuff was smoke-damaged.

“There were five appliances - two from Wellington, two from Telford Central and one from Shrewsbury.

“The owner was there through most of it.”

Mr Morris said no-one was evacuated and no-one was injured in the blaze.

The cause is being investigated, but is not thought to be suspicious.

Mr Morris said: “An investigation has been launched by the fire service and the police.

“Police were there controlling the road.

“The building measures about 50m by 20m and is on two floors.”

Constable Pete Simmonds, of Telford Police, said a number of police officers were called to the scene to control traffic.

He said: “We are still liaising with the fire investigation service, but we don’t think it is suspicious.

“We blocked off Church Street at about 1am, so the fire service could get the fire engines close to the scene. Diversions were in place.”
