shews_logotm.jpgA road near Shrewsbury Town’s new stadium will be closed for five weeks while work begins on traffic calming measures. Sutton Road will be closed between Wenlock Road and Laundry Lane from Monday.

The work aims to slow down motorists and reduce accidents.

Sections of the road will be raised to deter speeding drivers while buildouts will be introduced to give motorists from certain directions priority.

New uncontrolled pedestrian crossings will also be created and improvements will be made to street lighting.

Shropshire County Council is introducing the measures as part of its Local Transport Plan which was agreed before work began on the New Meadow, following previous safety concerns raised about the road.

But council chiefs hope the scheme will also help slow down or divert motorists from using the route when Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s new £15million stadium opens in Oteley Road this summer.

Laura Owen, Shropshire County Council spokeswoman, said: “There will be more cars when the stadium opens, so hopefully it will deter speeding drivers from going down there.”

Jason Hughes, the authority’s senior engineer, said: “The scheme will be implemented over a number of years, in three separate phases to reduce traffic speed and prevent accidents along this stretch of road.”
