AFC Telford trip is off

AFC Telford United’s eagerly-anticipated top-of-the table clash with Witton Albion tonight has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Groundstaff at Witton’s Wincham Park worked all morning in an effort to get the game on, but their efforts were in vain as the match referee took his decision shortly before 1.30pm.

A travelling army of more than 500 Bucks fans had been expected to make the trip to Cheshire for the meeting between the UniBond League premier division’s top two teams.

Long-time leaders Telford have gone five without a win, while Witton have been catching up with an impressive run that has seen them win six of their last eight, scoring 31 goals in the process.

And Bucks assistant manager Larry Chambers insisted they were not too disappointed by the news, and would now be able to focus on Saturday’s trip to Ossett Town instead.

“You always want to play and the lads were up for the game,” he said. “But we’ve just got to get on with it now.

Worst

“The bonus is that it can give people like Steve Palmer (the club captain) a bit longer to get fully fit and we can get down to some proper training.

“We’d have liked to have played the game, but it’s not the worst thing in the world that it’s off.

“I think Witton have been very wise in making the decision early rather than leaving it until 6.30pm.

“It’s surprised me because I’ve been in Manchester today and the weather’s been glorious, but there was a lot of rain on Sunday and last night.”

Witton secretary Peter Riley added: “The pitch was just too dangerous I’m afraid, and the referee said we had no choice but to call the game off.”

Meanwhile, Chambers revealed they were still awaiting a decision from a mystery transfer target as they look for their second signing in the last week, following on from the arrival of midfielder Lee Chilton from Alvechurch last Friday.

They will also open talks with a third target tomorrow, having served seven days’ notice last week.
