Cricket club arson attack

bobby5.jpgVandals set fire to a lawnmower and threw paint on equipment at a Shrewsbury cricket club, causing hundreds of pounds damage.

The attack on Shelton Cricket Club was discovered by members on Sunday morning.

Paint and graffiti was daubed on a generator and parts of the clubhouse, which is next to Shelton Hospital, and a petrol lawnmower was moved by the culprits and set alight.

It is not the first time the club at the rear of Racecourse Lane has been hit.

Members say there have been at least six attacks in the last few months.

On other occasions covers have been ripped, paint has been thrown on the clubhouse, equipment has been dragged onto the pitch and chairs have been smashed.

Club chairman Gareth Cadwallader said he was yet to assess the cost of the latest wrecking spree but previous incidents had cost the club thousands of pounds.

“This seems to be an ongoing thing. It is just kids who have nothing better to do.

“It is just very pathetic. There is no need for it at all,” he said.

Maria Hawkaluk, Shrewsbury police spokeswoman, said anyone with information about the attack should contact the police on 08457 444888 or 0800 555111.
