A5 to close as work begins

traffic-cone.jpgHighways bosses have confirmed that work on resurfacing one of Shropshire’s busiest roads will start in late March.

The A5 will be closed overnight at Oswestry and Shrewsbury for the maintenance.

Traffic will be prohibited at Mile End roundabout, Oswestry, at night for three weekends from March 26 and April 4.

The resurfacing work on the roundabout and approach roads will be undertaken between 8pm and 5am.The Highways Agency also plans to close a stretch near Shrewsbury for five nights from March 19.

The work at Mile End - the junction of the A5, B4579 Shrewsbury Road and A483, the main South Wales arterial route - is part of a project to reduce accidents and delays.

Annie Harris, of the Highways Agency, said: “The Mile End roundabout will be closed to through A5 traffic whilst this work is being carried out.”

Detours will be along the B5009 between the A5 junction at Queens Head and Whittington and the A495 between Whittington and the A5 roundabout; on the unclassified Shrewsbury Road (formerly A483) between the A5 Aston junction and A483 junction and at Maes Y Clawdd between the B4579 junction and Maesbury Road junction and along Maesbury Road to the A483 junction.
