Police hunt for inmate on run

David Alan PricePolice are hunting a Shropshire man who was part of a major drugs ring, after he became the latest prisoner to abscond from a controversial open jail.

David Alan Price, from Wem, who should be serving a seven-and-a-half year prison sentence, failed to return to HMP Sudbury, in Derbyshire, on Sunday.

The 32-year-old was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court in August 2004 for drug offences, said Derbyshire police.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire Police said escaped prisoners frequently returned to the area in which they lived, but there was no suggestion that Price was heading back to the Shropshire area.

She said: “David Alan Price failed to return to HMP Sudbury on Sunday February 18, 2007.

“His last known address was in Wem, Shropshire.

“People often gravitate to where they are from after escaping, but we have no firm evidence to suggest he will head back to Shropshire. Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of this man is asked not to approach him but to immediately contact their local police or Crimestoppers.”

Price is described as white, 5ft 8ins, of medium build, with short dark brown hair and brown eyes. He was sent to HMP Sudbury after being convicted of playing a part in a major drugs ring involved in smuggling cocaine worth around £250,000.

More than 660 inmates have gone missing from Sudbury in the past 10 years - including five convicted killers in the last five months.

Anyone with information can contact their local police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
