Lovebirds celebrate 30 years

Kevin and Gillian Frost renewed their vows at Wellington Register OfficeRomance is still alive for Shropshire lovebirds Kevin and Gillian Frost after 30 years of blissful marriage.

Grandparents Kevin, 48, and Gillian, 47, still hold hands, cuddle up on the sofa and send each other lovey-dovey text messages on their mobile phones.

And after missing out on a “proper” wedding 30 years ago, they pulled out all the stops when they renewed their vows at Wellington Register Office on Saturday.

This time around they had a wedding cake, confetti, a meal at the Clock Tower, Donnington, and a disco at nearby Turreff Hall.

And they will be heading for warmer climes this summer when they jet off to Spain in June to enjoy their first ever honeymoon.

Bricklayer Kevin and Gillian, a cleaner, have four daughters and three grandchildren.

They have lived all their lives in Church Walk, Donnington.

They grew up six doors away, but went to separate secondary schools - Wrockwardine Wood for Gillian and the Sutherland for Kevin.

Love blossomed when they were teenagers, but the original wedding ceremony in 1977 was not much of an occasion.

Daughter Louise Heighway, 26, said: “They were 17 and 18 when they got married at Wellington Register Office and Mum was six months pregnant.

“It was just a quick wedding and then back to my mum’s mum’s and that was it.

“They started talking about doing it properly last June and we all thought it was a great idea.

“Mum got herself a nice smart outfit for the ceremony, while Dad hired a waistcoat, dress shirt and cravat so he could look his best.”

She added: “Mum and Dad are smashing. They are brilliant role models and the best parents you could ask for.

“Everything about them shows they are still very much in love. They hold hands, cuddle up on the sofa and Mum will send Dad silly text messages at work.”

She added: “It was a wonderful day on Saturday. Everything went well and it was lovely.”

The best man at the vows renewal ceremony was family friend George Bates, who also lives in Church Walk.

Also joining in the celebrations were their other daughters, Emma, 29, and 22-year-old twins Claire and Sarah.
