Darts ace Eric Bristow helped boost the Shropshire Star’s Flying Doctor Appeal at a special evening at a Telford pub.

A poster of the former world champion was auctioned in aid of the appeal, and then signed by the star himself for the winner.
About 100 people were at the Bell and Bails in St Georges and Bristow was there to launch a darts knockout and as part of a general promotional evening.
But after reading about the launch of the Flying Doctor Appeal the public house owner decided to take the opportunity to do some fundraising in support of the cause.
The appeal aims to raise £70,000 to fund a flying doctor to join the Shropshire-based air ambulance, providing heightened on-the-spot medical skills and capabilities at emergencies to which the helicopter is called.
It is a specific, targeted fundraising effort on top of the normal fundraising for the charity, and cash raised for the Flying Doctor Appeal should be sent to the Shropshire Star’s appeal office, the address of which is on our donation form.
“We got £55 for the picture, which was bought by Martin, one of our regulars,” said a pub spokeswoman.
“He wants it to be mounted and put on the wall in the pub.”
She said that Eric Bristow had said he had had a great night and was planning to return.
“It was a relaxed evening. He mingled and chatted with everyone. He did a talk to begin with, and then he played darts against everybody, had a drink with people and a chat, and signed autographs. Locals bought him his pints of Guinness, as they do.”
She said the evening had gone well, although she would have liked to have raised more for the appeal from the auction.
“We timed it wrong, to be honest. They did it towards the end of the evening, and a lot of people had filtered out by that time, rather than towards the beginning. We will know for the next time.”
