Council worker inquiry launched

An employee from Telford & Wrekin Council has been suspended and an investigation launched, bosses revealed today.

The member of staff is believed to be Kara May, an assistant from the licensing department, who has worked for the council since April 2004.

The suspension came after Miss May was arrested by police at her home on January 26. She was questioned by officers and released on bail while the investigation continues. It is believed the investigation surrounds £15,000 which has gone missing from the council.

Miss May had already resigned from the council and was due to celebrate at a leaving party with friends and colleagues on the day of her arrest. She was due to finish today.

Miss May did not wish to comment on the arrest or investigation, but a neighbour said she was “devastated”.

Kate Bond, Telford & Wrekin Council spokeswoman, said: “I can confirm an employee has been suspended pending an investigation.”

Sarah Warren, Telford police spokeswoman, said: “We can confirm a woman was arrested on suspicion of deception offences in the Telford area.

“She was questioned by officers at Malinsgate Police Station in relation to matters of dishonesty and bailed pending further inquiries.”
