Concern on village HGV traffic

People in a village near Oswestry have been hit by the wing mirrors of lorries using the route as a shortcut to the A5, it was claimed today.

Concerned residents in Ruyton-XI-Towns have spoken of their fears as lorries mount the pavement as they walk their children to school.

Villagers raised a host of other traffic concerns at the Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting in Ruyton. PACT has been set up by West Mercia Police as part of the policing plan to allow people to air concerns.

At the end, people vote on what they think are the three most important points of that meeting, which are then be taken on by a panel. The panel work on these problems and report back at the next meeting.

Kath Humphreys, who was at the meeting, said: “The three main issues selected for further discussion by the panel were all concerned with traffic hazards.

“The first was the volume, the type and the speed of the vehicles that use Ruyton as a shortcut to and from the A5 – particularly the adverse impact of HGVs on our environment and daily life.

“People spoke vehemently about being hit by wing mirrors as they walked their children to school, about lorries unable to pass the oncoming traffic mounting the narrow pavement, and about visible damage they caused to the structure of the Platt Bridge.”

The second issue selected was the dangers created by parking and speeding motorists outside the village school and the third was the long delay in making Shottatton crossroads safer.

Councillor Aggie Caesar Homden, a member of the panel, said the traffic issues have been passed to County Councillor Dilys Gaskill and Shropshire County Council had been requested to attend the next PACT meeting to address residents’ concerns.
