Well, what a dull weekend. The evil and satanic weather put a stop on Friday’s scheduled fixture against Rochdale, so my football entertainment was only generated by laughing at the Wolves and Walsall results and
enjoying watching the Reading and Sheffield United players imitate Ricky Hatton.
The only news to emit from Gay Meadow was that of the continuation of our beloved leader’s mass January culling of all fringe players, Marco Adaggio and Gavin Cadwallader the latest through the exit door, destination unknown.
Not much of a surprise, although a shame to see Marco depart as whenever he did make a fleeting appearance, the occasionally amusing ‘Better than Baggio’ chant would rise up from the ashes.
So, Messrs Hogg, Cowan,Thomas, Adaggio and Cadwallader all gone and it would appear that Neil Sorvel will
also be dumped on the conveyer belt. Last season, I was a big Sorvel fan, even more so when I found out he went to Spike Island to watch the Stone Roses play many moons ago.
However this season he has been slightly frustrating to watch, although I can only conclude that Stewart Drummond’s arrival began to signal the end of his Meadow days. No doubt he’ll end up at somewhere like Bury or Macclesfield.
Weather permitting, Tuesday sees our latest attempt to take on Bristol Rovers in the Paint thingy Cup take shape. I have no doubt at all though, that the elements will once again prevent the game from going ahead and result in Salop having to play something like two matches a day in February to keep up.
I guess it is quite fitting that in our final season at fortress Gay Meadow, the notorious River Severn should remind us all as to why the move to Oteley Road was so necessary. It just wouldn’t be right that we leave our home of so many years without having our customary flooded pitch and fixture congestion.
In fact as the days count down to the final match against Grimsby (not counting the play off semi final of course), rather than getting teary eyed and nostalgic about our departure to pastures new, I am
getting more and more delighted to be leaving.
The new ground does look pretty darn decent (www.newmeadow.com) and although I will miss certain
aspects of the Gay Meadow (location; terraces and William Hill bookies two minutes walk away to name a few), there surely isn’t one Salop fan who now doesn’t want to move. If only the quite rancid smell of urine that wafts from the ‘toilets’ on the corner of the Wakeman and Riverside terraces could be transported to the new ground, then it would feel like we’d never moved…
