A bit of crisis management was called for last week, writes our News Blogger David Burrows, when, instead of metaphorically (as we are most days) we were literally working in the dark.
A power cut down the road from our Ketley head office knocked out the lights (not the computers fortunately, as we have a back-up generator) and also our presses. Making the job of bringing out a paper somewhat, shall we say, trying.
It looked at first like we might be able to get all our editions out as usual, but it soon became clear that this was not going to happen. In the end the decision made that the best way forward was to combine our South and Bridgnorth editions and incorporate our Shrewsbury edition into Last.
It meant a bit of negotiating between various news editors about whose stories deserved the best shows, but fortunately, no punches were thrown.
After that came the task of looking at the things we had put out for editions that never saw the light of day to make sure they were resurrected for the following day. Not as easy a task as it sounds.
This all happened the day after our newsdesk Christmas do. Thanks for that, St Francis de Sales (the Patron Saint of Journalists, apparently). Asleep on the job again.
I was going to blog this on the day in question (Friday) but after it was all sorted, all I wanted to do was go home and have a nice pint.
Of vodka. I’ve just recovered.
