Jazz fans get in tune

Jazz enthusiasts should slip on their jiving shoes for a special festive music concert at a Shropshire pub next weekend.

Shropshire Youth Jazz Ensemble will perform its Christmas show at the Three Tuns, Bishop’s Castle, on Sunday, December 17.

The show, which is being promoted by Bishop’s Castle Jazz, will mark a welcome return for the band which will be hoping to repeat the success it enjoyed at the venue last year.

Crowds flocked to see the outfit when it performed to a capacity audience and received a standing ovation.

The concert promises something for all musical tastes as the band, described as “popular and innovative”, will play a fine mix of jazz standards as well as throwing in a range of original numbers to showcase their talents.

Well-known tunes will include show-stopping numbers such as The Blues Brothers’ Everybody Needs Somebody to Love and Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man.

Jazz fans can expect to catch a glimpse of the musical stars of the future. Over the band’s 12-year history many former members have gone on to make their mark in the music world.

The band features 30 talented young musicians from across the county and Wales.

The unique aspect of the band is the instrumentation, which includes cellos, flutes as well as the more traditional jazz instruments such as saxophones and trumpets.

Members rehearse throughout the year under the direction of top notch musical talents Chris Bolton and John Williams.

And in recent weeks they have been putting together the final touches for the big concert.

Promoter Frances Williams said it was a welcome return for one of the region’s top jazz outfits - particularly at a time of year when music fans like to let their hair down and have a good time.

“This looks set to be a great night and a terrific start to the Christmas celebrations,” she said.

“The music is written by John Williams and Chris Bolton who are co-founders and directors of the band.”

She added that the success of the concert could mean it becomes a regular Christmas feature in Bishop’s Castle.

The show starts at 8pm and tickets, priced £5, are available by contacting Bishop’s Castle Jazz on 01588 630357 or Frances Williams 01743 790769,
