Shropshire’s new traffic wardens today began issuing fines to drivers parking illegally across the county in a move to end traffic chaos.A total of 18 attendants were patrolling Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Whitchurch, Market Drayton, Oswestry and Wem.
In Shrewsbury three problem areas have been highlighted - Wyle Cop, High Street and Shoplatch - where the new traffic wardens are watching closely for illegal parking.
Motorists parked on double yellow lines now face a £60 fine, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days, and increased to £90 if not paid within a month.
Drivers in Ludlow also face a new parking regime from today. Eddie McGrath, engineering service manager for Shrewsbury & Atc-ham Borough Council, said the wardens started their patrols at 9am today.
“People are pleased something is happening about illegal parking in the town centres,” he said.
Mayor of Bridgnorth Councillor Iain Seivewright said he thought the new traffic wardens would improve the situation in Bridgnorth.
“We have waited a long time for this and we are hoping it will lead to a great improvement in parking and reduce congestion in the town,” he said.
The traffic wardens have been recruited by Shropshire County Council, working with district and borough councils, which have taken over responsibility for parking enforcement from the police.
