County icon standing proud

bridge31.jpgWinston Churchill, Winnie the Pooh, Dr Who. Are you listening? You took one hell of a beating, writes our News Blogger David Burrows. Alongside these famous figures now, proudly, sits Shropshire’s own Iron Bridge. Abraham Darby, take a bow.

The bridge was today named as one of the Icons of England, alongside the V for victory sign, as modelled beautifully by Churchill (not the nodding dog . . . oh no, no, no) as well as the aforementioned honey guzzler and Dalek-botherer.

The icons have been identified by the Department of Culture. Nice to see the Government can actually get things right.

Other icons include Sergeant Pepper (his non-combatant medical brother Dr Pepper didn’t get a look in), the red telephone box, roast beef and Yorkshires (mmm) and Wimbledon. Which is also an icon of every other country in the world because they all know they have a better chance of winning a singles title there than we do.
