One word springs to mindwrites our news blogger David Burrows: Eek! Actually, I’m not sure if that qualifies as a lead. I’ve spent the last 14-odd years waiting for someone to find out that I don’t actually have a clue what I’m doing, and now someone has put me in charge of training one of our new journalists!
What’s more, from time to time they also give me the responsibility of running the whole newsdesk. It’s like they don’ know me at all.
I’m surprised at how worked up I’ve got about being a mentor to an impressionable youngster. Not only do I have the chance to shape her future (poor soul!) but her performance will also reflect on me.
Fortunately, she seems to have hit the ground running, so fingers crossed I’ll come out of it smelling like roses.

She will be assessed on court coverage, press conferences, sport, family events, numeracy, her legal knowledge and a host of other things.
Think I better start brushing up now!
