Sceptre House in Admaston is a large, Victorian gem of a home that is just perfect for family life - for almost a decade it has been home to the Thornton family.
Peter, owner of Industrial Bearings in Wellington, his wife Elaine and their three children are now moving to a property with more land which they have already bought in Walcot.
Therefore Sceptre House is being sold through Lane Fox of Shrewsbury for £525,000 with no chain.
Peter said: “In theory we’re downsizing. We’re losing one room downstairs but gaining another room upstairs. We also need more space for the children to play football.”
Both Peter and Elaine agree that Sceptre House is a wonderful home for entertaining. The reception rooms are interlinked and offer a lot of space. In all there is a large hall, sitting room, family room, downstairs wc, kitchen, utility, dining room, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a connecting fifth bedroom and a cellar.
Outside there is a large front and rear garden, garage and plenty of parking space.
The home is set well back from the road and is very quiet. It is secluded, being hidden by trees, and the garden is walled. In fact it would be hard to know that the home is there as it is so well hidden.
Elaine said: “It is very quiet considering you are on a main road. It is a large house close to shops and schools and close to the M54 for commuters.”
The house itself has bags of charm and character and original features include a butler’s cupboard in the dining room and beautifully arched doorways in the entrance hall.
The front door opens to the square entrance hall. To the left of this is the smart dining room and behind that is the rear facing family living/kitchen.
This is a great space, which leads out to the rear garden through French doors and forms part of an earlier extension, which included a further bedroom above.
From the family living/kitchen you walk into a generous utility room, which in turn connects to the rear facing family room. This room then leads through to a hall and wc and the impressive front facing sitting room, which again opens into the hall.
The original wooden staircase lies between the hall and dining room. Upstairs high ceilings feature in the three front facing bedrooms. A door from the third bedroom opens to another (fifth bedroom), which could be used as a bedroom or office.
Peter said that he had considered building an extra landing above the downstairs rear hall in order to provide a separate access to bedroom five. This is an excellent idea, subject to planning permission.
A shower bathroom plus a family bathroom lie opposite the three front bedrooms and the master suite, with en suite bathroom, lies above the kitchen and faces the rear.
Sceptre House has a lovely, welcoming atmosphere and the Thorntons have obviously been happy in the property. It is very unusual to find a house like Sceptre House in Telford.
Peter said: “I’m led to believe that years ago a doctor used to live here and had a surgery here and upstairs were apartments for a nurse. The people we bought it off had converted it back to a house.”
The previous owners were the ones to add the kitchen and bedroom extension.
Maintenance
During their time the Thorntons have added the French doors out to the garden, installed a new fire and fireplace in the sitting room and decorated throughout.
Outside they removed a lot of trees at the front. Peter said that although the house was Victorian the house was “pretty low maintenance”.
He and Elaine were able to buy the house after an earlier sale fell through. Peter said: “We lived in Kynnersley for about four years in a little cottage and we decided we needed something bigger.
“We saw the for sale board up and Tim Gough (estate agent and friend) knew Bill Jarvis who owned it.
“They were good friends and I think the sale had fallen through and Tim said ‘Have a word with Bill’. We came round straight away and decided we really liked it here.”
Elaine said: “We will miss it. If we could pick it up and put it in two acres we would.”
