There’s a saying that size isn’t everything. That is, of course, unless you are a slightly overweight mother wanting to accompany your teenage daughter to hospital. When Nicola Brown was experiencing pains six months into her pregnancy an ambulance was called.
Her concerned mum Tracy naturally assumed she would be able to accompany her daughter to give her support (Click here to read the original story).
But because West Midlands Ambulance Service has some ambulances carrying more than there permitted load, Mrs Brown was told she could not travel because of “weight issues”.
Nothing like making someone feel bad about themselves while they’re busy worrying about their daughter and unborn grandchild.
The ambulance service says some vehicles are marginally over their 3.5 ton capacity after equipment is added and to comply with legislation, they have been forced to limit carrying patients’ relatives.
The problem is being looked at, but in the meantime maybe jogging behind the ambulance to the hospital will help all the concerned relatives lose some weight, eh?

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit! So the ambulances run close to their gross vehicle weight, big deal. With today’s technology it’s like a small hospital on wheels, trying to accommodate for all unexpected emergencies. I hope you never need their services.
It certainly is a shame that the girl’s mother was unable to travel with her, but Ithe ‘m sure the ambulance crew made decision based on the girl’s safety, the safety of the unborn baby and the safety of the crew themselves. Or perhaps you feel they should have jeopardised everybody’s safety and let the “slightly overweight” mother travel with them (Are we referring to one or two pounds overweight or maybe one or two stone????).
Safety comes first and there cannot be any compromise. Perhaps the crew should have been praised for their efficiency and not criticised for not giving free taxi rides to the hospital?
Mrs Brown could have quite easily had got a taxi for herself instead of waiting 45 minutes for her father.
What a drama queen
