Flats plan at pylon fight site

pylon.jpgControversial plans were revealed today to build a block of flats on a site that was the subject of a bitter battle to remove an electricity pylon just three years ago. Residents today vowed to fight the plans, claiming the flats in Hadley Park Road, Hadley, would replace one problem with another.

They say the proposed building will attract anti-social behaviour, will flood the area with traffic and is out of keeping with the area.

Residents won a hard-fought battle to get a huge electricity pylon removed from the site in 2003 after more than five years of campaigning.

Electricity bosses eventually agreed to lay cables underground to replace the pylon in a project costing £3.75 million after the issue was taken to Parliament.

Rabinder Dhami, whose house in Wheatley Crescent backs on to the site, supported the campaign and has now written to Telford & Wrekin Council to oppose the new proposal.

He said: “It’s almost like it was a waste of time now. We put that much effort into making it disappear and what we’re looking at now will be just as much of an eyesore.

“There are a lot of people who aren’t happy with what’s being proposed.

“It will be a huge build and this type of housing will be used as temporary accommodation, not for families.

“I would like something more permanent.

“These types of development have been a target for vandalism – it’s been known in other areas nearby.”

Lakhuir Singh, of Wheatley Crescent, said: “It’s an over-build for the plot and it’s not in keeping with the other housing here.”

Developer Cheney Homes declined to comment on the concerns.
